Margo Harden, born
November 25, 1950 passed away on November 20, 2011 in Las Vegas,
Nevada. She was preceded in death by her husband Craig Harden and
parents Richard and Marguerite Hale.
Survived by two sons, Mikeal Harden and Erik Harden; three brothers,
Richard Hale, Dan Hale, and David Hale; and four sisters, Sandra
Groethe, Suzan Dreyer, Jane Moss, and Joelle Floren.
It's hard to believe that Margo has been gone for more than two
years. She is my little sister, the youngest of us five sisters,
the seventh of eight siblings. She was shy, smart, athletic, and
musically-gifted. I was envious of her beautiful curly hair and
dimples. We grew up in a place and at a time when we could play
inside or out with little interference from grownups, walking or
riding bikes to school, the swimming pool, or anywhere in town.
There were some times when Margo and I did not get along very well.
Our Mom said it was because we were too much alike.
Maybe I would have appreciated those times more if I had known we
would spend all of our adult lives living many hundreds of miles
apart, seeing each other only during family reunions and rare visits
to each others' homes - hers in Las Vegas, mine, ultimately, near
Houston. One of those times was in November 2011 when some of our
family gathered at my house for a few days. It was a fun time with
laughs and reminiscences and appreciation for what we have in
common. We surprised Margo with an early birthday cake. Just four
days after flying back to Vegas she called for another chat, still
basking in the afterglow of our get-together and making vague plans
for a future visit. So the call from Margo's son the very next day
telling of her passing in her sleep was an unbelievable shock.
I appreciate your plan to remember Margo with a tree-planting. She
was always a nature-lover, even in Nevada where the deserts and
mountains are so different from what we knew in Iowa. I will not be
able to attend the ceremony in July, but will be thinking of Margo
then as I often do.
