Biographical Information:
My memories of high school are a bit blurred. I was very
quiet back then. My summers were filled with walking the
beans during the day and swimming at the pool every night
and the academic school year was filled with lots of studies
and working part-time in the meat room at Joe's Supervalu.
After graduation, I went to Iowa State where I got a dual
major in botany and zoology and never came back to live in
Iowa Falls, only holiday visits.
I think I inherited the writing bug from my dad as I
eventually ended up a science editor and then a food and
travel editor at The World & I magazine, the monthly
publication of the Washington Times, from August 1985 until
April 2004. When the magazine closed in 2004 without
warning, I was forced to recreate myself. I tried teaching
7th grade science, but absolutely hated how much time I had
to spend on discipline instead of the curriculum.
It has taken me a couple of years, but I have found my
new direction. I will be starting a Ph.D. in cultural
heritage tourism at Purdue this August 2006. (I earned a
master's in tourism from George Washington University in
2004 thinking it would inform my job and afford me job
security!!). I have been on the East Coast for 30 years--in
DC for almost 20--but we just sold our house and are moving
to West Lafayette, Indiana as of June 30th. It's a big move
for the family--but very exciting.
Since I started a family kind of late, my oldest son
Brian is only 18. He will be leaving for basic training in
the Marines on June 12th, so won't be coming with us. My
other two sons, Robert (16) and Brendan (14) will come with
me to West Lafayette to attend high school. My Irish husband
Liam (he's from Bray, County Wicklow south of Dublin), who I
met in New York City, is going to keep his job in the
seafood industry in Maryland for a while and fly back and
forth.
My hope is to become a college professor in tourism
somewhere in the world after I graduate and am grateful to
have a husband who will let me follow my dream. And, hey,
since Indiana is a lot closer to Iowa, I might even make it
to the 40th reunion. Hope to see you there.
